The Hutt Valley is flat, which changes the job in two ways. Access is easy, so labour is usually cheaper here than on a Wellington hillside. And the valley floor gets colder than the harbour side of the hill, with frosts that Wellington city rarely sees, so condensation complaints are common. The valley has a large rental stock and every private rental has had to meet all five Healthy Homes standards since 1 July 2025. The ventilation standard needs each habitable room to have openable windows totalling at least 5 percent of the floor area, able to be fixed open.
