Emergency Window Repair in Wellington

Glass and Window Repair Wellington runs a 24 hour emergency glazing service for homes, rentals, shops and offices. Break in overnight, southerly through a bedroom window, a smashed shopfront on a Saturday: we come out, clear the broken glass, board or temporarily glaze the opening, and make the building secure and weathertight. Permanent glass follows once it has been cut to size.

  • 24 hour callout across Wellington, the Hutt and Porirua
  • Boarded and made secure first, glazed once glass is cut
  • Glass cleared and the site left safe before we go
  • Written report and photos for your insurer

Two things drive most of our emergency work here. The first is weather. Wellington sits in the Cook Strait wind funnel and averages 173 days a year with gusts over 60 km/h, and the Mount Kaukau gauge above Khandallah recorded 202 km/h during the June 2013 storm. The second is break ins, where the glass is only part of the problem and getting the building closed up before dark is the whole point of the call.

What happens when you call

We ask three things: where you are, what has broken, and whether anyone is at risk from the glass. If there is loose glass hanging in a frame above a footpath or a doorway, that gets dealt with first.

On arrival we clear the broken glass, cut back any glass still held in the rebate, and either board the opening with plywood or fit temporary glazing where the look matters, such as a retail frontage. We measure at the same visit so the permanent glass can be ordered straight away.

Storm damage and what the wind actually breaks

It is rarely the glass on its own. A gust catches an awning window that was left on the latch, snaps the stay, and the sash swings through the frame. Or a gate, a trampoline or a sheet of roofing comes across a section and hits the window side on.

So we look at the hardware as well as the pane. Replacing the glass and leaving a bent stay or a failed restrictor in place just means we are back next winter. Where a window keeps failing in the same wind we will talk to you about thicker glass or a restrictor stay rather than repeating the repair.

Break ins, security and insurance

After a break in the priority is a secure building, not a perfect one. Plywood over the opening, screwed rather than nailed, is faster and stronger than waiting for glass. If the target was a shopfront we can fit temporary glazing so the shop can trade the next morning.

We photograph the damage, note the glass type and thickness, and give you a written quote and invoice that itemises the work. Insurers ask for exactly that. If the entry point was a single glazed pane in a vulnerable spot, laminated glass on the replacement is worth considering, because it holds together when it is hit.

Commercial and after hours

Shops, offices, schools and body corporates get the same 24 hour number. For retail we aim to have the frontage boarded or temporarily glazed before opening time, and we work around trading hours for the permanent glass wherever we can.

Large shopfront panes are made to order, so a full glass replacement on a big frontage is usually several days out. The board up is not.

Emergency Glass and Window Repair in Wellington: common questions

How quickly can you get here?

For genuine emergencies in Wellington city we aim to be on site within a couple of hours, and faster where there is loose glass over a public footpath. Send the form and we will come back with a real time, not a guess.

Do you board up, or do I have to wait for glass?

We board up on the first visit. Glass is cut to size afterwards, and for toughened or double glazed units that takes a few days. The building is secure in the meantime.

What does an emergency callout cost?

An after hours callout sits on top of the glass and labour. Standard hours work carries no emergency loading. We tell you the callout figure on the phone before we leave.

Can you deal with my insurer?

We give you photos and an itemised quote and invoice with glass type and thickness listed, which is what most insurers want. The claim itself stays between you and them.

Got three quotes for retrofitting the front of the house. Only ones who measured every opening and explained why the north facing rooms needed different glass. Eleven windows over two days, and the road noise dropped more than I expected.

Landlord here. Had four properties assessed for the Healthy Homes ventilation rule and two needed openable sashes freed up rather than new joinery, which saved me a fortune. Straight answers, written report, no upselling.

Ranch slider had been jamming for years and we assumed it needed replacing. Turned out to be rollers and a bent track. Two hours, a fraction of the price we were braced for.
