And the building is a business, so the cost of being shut is usually higher than the cost of the glass. We plan around that instead of around our own schedule.

Getting you trading again

On the first visit we clear the glass, cut back anything still hanging in the frame and either board with plywood or fit temporary glazing. For a retail frontage temporary glazing is usually worth the extra, because a boarded shop looks closed even when it is open.

We measure at the same visit so the permanent pane can be ordered immediately.

Glass specification for commercial frontages

Shopfront glazing sits in a walk into position, so it is toughened or laminated under NZS 4223. Laminated is worth considering on a frontage that has been hit before, because it holds together and slows an intruder down instead of dropping out in one go.

Large panes also have to be rated for wind, and in Wellington that is not a formality. On an exposed corner site the glass thickness is driven by wind load instead of by size alone.

We work early, late and weekends where a shop cannot afford to close. In the central city that often means dealing with a footpath permit, traffic management or an after hours loading window, and we sort that as part of the job.
