Wellington breaks glass in ways other cities do not. A gate left unlatched in a northerly becomes a hammer. Trampolines, umbrellas and outdoor furniture move on their own here. Wellington records the highest annual average daily maximum gust in the country at around 65 km/h, so wind damage is a routine callout for us and not a freak event. Break ins and stray cricket balls make up most of the rest.

What glass replacement costs

A standard sized single pane runs about $250 to $600 including the callout, labour and glass. Larger panes sit between $600 and $1,200. A failed double glazed unit is generally $350 to $800, and oversized units can reach $1,200.

After hours emergency work carries a callout on top. Toughened and laminated glass cost more than plain annealed glass, and obscure patterns can add lead time if the pattern has to come from a supplier rather than off our racks.

Safety glass is not optional in some positions

NZS 4223 sets out where safety glass has to go: in and beside doors, in bathrooms and wet areas, in low level glazing where someone can walk into it, and in large panes. If the pane we are replacing sits in one of those positions, it gets toughened or laminated glass whether or not the original did.

Older homes very often have plain annealed glass in places that would fail today's rules, because the rules changed after the house was built. Replacing it is the one moment you get to fix that cheaply, so we will point it out instead of quietly putting the same thing back.

Matching old and obscure glass

Bathroom and hallway glass in Wellington homes runs through a long list of patterns, and plenty of the 1960s and 70s ones are no longer made. We carry the common current patterns and can usually get close on the rest.

Character homes are a different job again. Original villa glass has ripples and slight distortion that modern float glass does not, and leadlight panels need a leadlight specialist instead of a straight pane swap. We will tell you honestly when a like for like match is not possible and what the nearest option looks like.

Insurance claims

Most house policies cover accidental glass breakage, often with the excess as your only cost. We provide an itemised written quote and invoice with the glass type and thickness listed, which is what insurers ask for.

We do not tell you whether to claim, because on a small pane the excess can be more than the job. Get the quote first, then decide.

Glass Replacement in Wellington: common questions

How fast can you replace a broken window?

Common sizes in standard glass are usually measured and glazed within 24 to 48 hours. Toughened, laminated and sealed double glazed units are made to order, so allow several days to a week. We board up in the meantime.

Do I have to replace the whole window if one pane is broken?

No. In almost every case we replace the glass and leave the frame alone. Whole window replacement only comes up when the frame itself is corroded or rotten.

Can you replace glass in a double glazed unit?

The unit is sealed, so the whole insulated glass unit gets replaced and not one pane of it. The frame and the sash stay where they are.

Will my insurance cover it?

Most house policies cover accidental glass breakage. Whether it is worth claiming depends on your excess against the job. We give you an itemised quote so you can work that out.

Got three quotes for retrofitting the front of the house. Only ones who measured every opening and explained why the north facing rooms needed different glass. Eleven windows over two days, and the road noise dropped more than I expected.

Ranch slider had been jamming for years and we assumed it needed replacing. Turned out to be rollers and a bent track. Two hours, a fraction of the price we were braced for.
