Miramar has two conditions that shape almost every quote. Wellington Airport sits at the neck of the peninsula, so much of the suburb is under an approach or departure path. And the peninsula is surrounded by water on three sides, so salt reaches the joinery on elevations you would not expect. Both are solvable, but not by a standard double glazed unit ordered without thinking about it.

Standard double glazing will not fix aircraft noise

This is the single most common disappointment we get called about in Miramar. Two panes of the same thickness with a narrow air gap resonate at the same frequency, so sound passes through fairly happily. The improvement over single glazing is real but modest.

Acoustic glazing is a different specification. Laminated glass on the outer pane, a different thickness on the inner, and a wider cavity. The laminate interlayer damps vibration and the unequal panes stop the two resonating together. That combination is what cuts low frequency aircraft noise.

Seals matter as much as glass for noise

A perfect acoustic unit in a sash with perished weather seals leaks sound straight around the edge. It is the same air path that lets the draught in.

So on a noise job we re rubber at the same time. Doing the glass and leaving the seals is how people spend a lot of money and hear very little difference.

Salt on a peninsula

With water on three sides there is no reliably sheltered elevation in Miramar. Hardware corrodes, powder coat chalks, and sliding window tracks collect salt as well as grit, which seizes rollers early.

Marine grade stainless hardware, three monthly washing and dry film lubricant in tracks instead of oil, which attracts grit, all make a real difference to how long joinery lasts out here.

What we get called out for in Miramar

Miramar sits on the same run as Island Bay, Kilbirnie and Hataitai, so we are usually in the area anyway.

Window repair in Miramar: common questions

Will double glazing stop the aircraft noise in Miramar?

Standard double glazing helps a little. For a real reduction you need laminated glass, unequal pane thicknesses and a wider cavity, plus good weather seals. That combination is what acoustic glazing means.

Do I need special hardware because of the salt?

Close to the water, yes. 316 marine grade stainless stays and catches last several times longer than standard here.
