Screens matter more in Wellington than they look like they should. The ventilation requirement under the Healthy Homes standards means rental windows have to be openable and able to be fixed open, and tenants will not leave a window open all summer if the room fills with insects. On the coast, screens also take a hammering from salt and wind, so aluminium frames and stainless or fibreglass mesh outlast the cheap kits.

Remesh or replace

If the frame is straight and the corners are sound, remeshing is much cheaper than a new screen. The old mesh and spline come out, new mesh goes in and is rolled into the groove, and the frame goes back.

If the frame is bent, twisted or has broken corner stakes, a new frame made to measure is the better spend, because a bent frame will never seal against the joinery.

Mesh types

Standard fibreglass mesh is fine for most windows. Pet resistant mesh is a heavier weave that stands up to a cat pushing at it. Midge or sandfly grade has a much finer weave, which cuts airflow slightly but keeps out the small stuff.

On coastal homes we use aluminium or stainless frames and avoid the thin steel corner hardware that seizes in salt air.

Screens and the ventilation rule

A flyscreen does not reduce the openable area for the Healthy Homes ventilation calculation, because the window still opens. What it does is make the tenant actually use the window, which is the point of the standard in the first place.

Mesh, frames and what lasts

Choosing the mesh

Standard fibreglass mesh suits most windows. Pet resistant is a heavier weave that stands up to a cat pushing at it. Midge and sandfly grade has a much finer weave, which cuts airflow slightly but keeps the small things out.

On the coast we use aluminium or stainless frames and avoid the thin steel corner hardware in cheap kits, because it seizes in salt air within a couple of seasons.

Remesh or replace

If the frame is straight and the corners are sound, remeshing costs a fraction of a new screen. The old mesh and spline come out, new mesh is rolled into the groove and the frame goes back.

A bent or twisted frame will never seal against the joinery no matter how good the mesh is, so that one gets remade to measure.

Flyscreen Repair in Wellington: common questions

Can my old flyscreen be remeshed instead of replaced?

If the frame is straight and the corners are sound, yes, and it costs much less than a new screen.

Do you make screens for windows that never had them?

Yes, made to measure and colour matched to your joinery.

Will a flyscreen affect Healthy Homes compliance?

No. The window still opens and can be fixed open, so the openable area calculation is unchanged.

Got three quotes for retrofitting the front of the house. Only ones who measured every opening and explained why the north facing rooms needed different glass. Eleven windows over two days, and the road noise dropped more than I expected.

Landlord here. Had four properties assessed for the Healthy Homes ventilation rule and two needed openable sashes freed up rather than new joinery, which saved me a fortune. Straight answers, written report, no upselling.

Ranch slider had been jamming for years and we assumed it needed replacing. Turned out to be rollers and a bent track. Two hours, a fraction of the price we were braced for.
